The Scientist Survey is a nationwide representative trend study. The first two surveys took place in 2010 and 2016. In 2017, it was decided to shorten the interval of the researcher surveys to three years, so that the latest survey had been carried out in winter term 2019/20.
The Scientist Survey represents a continuous long-term barometer of the academic world and aims to become the key German survey program in the field of science research. It is a fundamental tool for monitoring and studying working and research conditions at German universities and is intended to provide a comprehensive picture of opinion on the situation and development of the German science system. Changes in attitudes and opinions on science policy issues over time are examined in trend analyses.

The data also form a basis for professional publications and thus also serve as an empirical basis for public discussions and political decision-making processes. The aim is to regularly provide high-quality and well-documented data via the DZHW Research Data Centre (FDZ), which can be accessed by those interested in research and science policy.
The Scientists Survey aims to become the key German survey program in the field of science research. It is conceptualized as a multi-topic survey with the goal of making high-quality, well documented data readily available on a regular and permanent basis. In addition, the prepared and anonymised data is made available permanently and well documented via the DZHW Research Data Centre (FDZ), thus making it accessible to other interested parties in research and science policy.

The latest survey was conducted during the winter term 2019/20 between November and February. 8822 scientists had taken partin a broad-based multi-topic survey on working and research conditions in science. In addition to the core questions running in every wave, we had integrated key topics on publication behaviour, collection and use of research information, knowledge transfer and Open Data into the questionnaire.
To ensure that the questionnaire was not too long and the burden on the individual respondents was not too great, we had systematically modularised the questionnaire. Although all respondents received the questions from the core instrument as well as some central questions on the assessment of the science system, they each received only one of four special topics. In this way we made it possible to reduce the actually quite extensive survey program for the respondents to 25 minutes.

The central results of the survey will be published in autumn 2020 in a Report Barometer für die Wissenschaft. The results prepared for this purpose will be presented exclusively in aggregated form and do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individual respondents. In addition, specialist publications on selected survey topics will be produced over the next three years.
In this way, the DZHW Scientist Survey would also like to contribute to the general science policy debate and give the scientific community the opportunity to reflect on itself and its working and research conditions.
